London Calling - Christmas Logs.

Post by Andy Richards »

After I'd typed up my logs I read through them and thought that perhaps it was a little bit quieter than normal this Christmas. So I checked back to my logs for previous years to see.
Well, this year I managed to miss a few stations, more than in previous years Pirates are using a wider range of frequencies now and also coming on at more variable or less predictable times. So,unless you are tuning all day,you will miss some stations.
We were missing some of the longer broadcasters, like Mystery,Playback,WMR,WNKR and LHH is fairly poor with me right now.
But except for 2008(When Christmas Day was a Thursday, which gave us four "Pirate" days in a row),this year was just as busy as all the others.
It will be interesting to see how many stations are on the bands on Sunday as the first Sunday of a New Year is usually quite busy.
Some good signals and programmes over the period.
I heard Spaceman on Christmas Eve but missed his other transmissions, great stuff as usual.Bluestar were coming in well too just 5Khz above him.Who was my UNID on 4100 on the same night?
Orion had a cracking great signal on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day but stronger on Christmas Day.
Geronimo had some really weird rapid fading going on at first, but got much stronger later.
Of course Mistletoe kept popping up all over the place as usual, obviously some signals stronger than others.
But he didn't seem to be on as much as previous years,or did I just miss some of his transmissions?
Magic always does nice shows and had a lovely signal on Christmas day,not so good on the Sunday.
Saturnus gets a good signal out on fairly low power, good to hear him too.
Borderhunter and Scotland also had big signals here as they normally do.Interesting to hear Albert saying that MW and especially FM was REALLY full of Pirates on Sunday.I am curious as to how busy these bands were in other parts of NL and maybe in other countries.MW Pirates have almost died out in the UK now,we normally get one or two over Christmas but although Sonnet Radio were heard this year I had nothing here.
On FM I counted 22 stations audible here last Sunday, but that's pretty normal in any part of London all year.
Quintus was stronger with me than he has been for quite a while and good signals from Victoria and Marconi too.
Good to hear Star back but they should have closed before 1400.No point competing with Russia......

Best signals were from Spaceman,Orion,Geronimo,Magic,Mistletoe,Borderhunter,Scotland,Victoria,Marconi,Quintus and Star.

Hi Paul,

You are a brave one!
New Years day is usually a poor pirate day......too many late nights and hangovers.......:-(

Don't come on too early, you probably won't have too many listeners.......:-)

But I bet the band is packed on Sunday!

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the report!
FM bands are crowded with pirates again past week, but today (31-12) it's total chaos.
Many, many stations, who all want to use the few clear freq. available.
10 KW is not enough for a good reception nowedays...
Some pirates use 15, 20, and at least one of them has 30 KW.
Using masts up too 110 meters with 8 'Ross' dipole antenna's this must be around 120 KW ERP! :D
Here a site with reports (only in Dutch, sorry)
